How to keep yourself safe while adapting new technologies?
We all want to be modern by adapting new techniques for performing our daily tasks rather than just sticking to old & traditional methods. But to adapt these methods, without their appropriate knowledge to perform them or without knowing their side effects & other pros and cons, it could be harmful for us. For example, in today’s time, there is a vast population which does online transactions through their devices. With increased number of such online users, the number of cyber-crimes is also increasing. In fact, people who don’t use online methods are also not safe these days. There might be fraudsters sitting somewhere, who are keeping an eye on us and thinking of us to be their next target.
How can we recognize these fraudsters?
Generally, these fraudsters call you and ask you about your bank account details by pretending them to be calling from your bank. Due to some awareness among people, about such cases, they are not getting success in this method. But, they have now found a new trick. Through this trick, they might request you to download some remote access applications, so that they can acquire your personal and sensitive information such as:
>Financial Account details
>OTP / Internet Password
>Card PIN / CVV
>Personal Information
Once download these applications, an OTP will be generated at your number. Once it is shared with the third person, he/she will be able to access your device which contains all of your important data and information. These fraud systems can lead to sharing of your mobile payment details such as UPI etc.
What can we do to avoid this?
One must have some knowledge about these tricks to keep themselves safe from such fraudulent activities.
Here are some of the preventive measures which a person should be aware of:
(i) Applications: Restrict yourself from downloading any application suggested by third party or any person you cannot trust at.
(ii) Terms & Conditions: Carefully read all the terms and conditions before installing any application.
(iii) Password/Pin: Keep changing your password / PIN frequently. Keep a security password/PIN on your device and only share it with your trust worthies and set different passwords for different accounts.
(iv) Mobile Number: Update your latest mobile number with your bank accounts.
(v) Keep Track: Keep checking your bank statements regularly.
(vi) Sharing Details: Never share your Bank Account Details / ATM Card PIN / CVV / OTP and your Internet Password with anyone. No bank asks your bank account details on telephone.
(vii) Links: Do not click on links send by unknown sources or email id and immediately delete suspicious emails.
(viii) Antivirus: Keep your Smartphone Protected. Get an antivirus in your device and always download applications from trusted app store.
(ix) Internet connection: Secure your Wi-Fi so that it cannot be easily hacked. Avoid using public networks while processing any bank account activity as it might not be secured.
Due to ingenuity of fraudsters, it cannot be said that these cybercrimes will be removed completely but yes, by taking some precautionary actions, these frauds can be reduced up to a huge extent.
